Helping Siblings with the Arrival of the New Baby
Read books about expecting the new baby. Begin reading books to siblings about a new baby coming into the family and talk about the new baby in utero. Although they may not completely understand, they will be primed for the arrival of the new baby.
Stagger the timing of changes. If a new bedroom or bed is required, make this change at least four to six weeks before the arrival of the new baby. This way, they will be less likely to associate their new room or bed with the arrival of the new baby. Any changes should not coincide with the arrival of the new baby.
Give siblings plenty of one-on-one time with Daddy. Less than three years between siblings can create friction between siblings and a new baby because siblings and a new baby will have high needs for parental attention.
Encourage siblings regular contact with new babies. Teach siblings the concept "gentle" in touching a new baby. This will help them get some practice in before the arrival of the new baby.
Expect moodiness. Don't be alarmed if siblings become more clingy or crabby when the new baby arrives. They will need to express themselves and feel secure when the new baby arrives. With time and your consideration, siblings will adapt into their new role with the new baby.
Remind siblings that they were once a new baby. Show siblings pictures of themselves when they were a new baby, the attention they got and the new baby gifts that they received when they were a new baby.
Buy a few special toys. It may also help to buy a few gifts that are just for them, so that when you are receiving new baby gifts for the new baby, and attention is being showered on the new baby, there is something for them.
Encourage siblings to help once the new baby is born. This will give them a sense of competence. They can bring a diaper, take an adult by the hand to see the new baby, help give the new baby a bath or give the new baby a toy.
Show siblings the benefits of being a big boy or girl. Involve them in activities they can do which the new baby can not do. Sitting on your lap and pointing to pictures as you read, putting a simple puzzle together, and other activities will continue his or her excitement in their own growth and the things they can do now that they could not do as a new baby.
