Potty Training Tips

Tips on potty training
Preparing and teaching your child to use the potty doesn't have to be hard work. Potty training does require significant preparation for both the child and the parent. Here are some potty training tips on preparing for the potty.

  • Make potty training a top priority. Make potty training your top priority on a consistent basis.
  • Clear your schedule before potty training. Select a time to begin the potty training when your family's routine is least likely to be disturbed with house guests, vacations, and so on. A long holiday weekend is ideal to start.
  • Choose your words carefully. Decide what words you use to describe body parts, urine, and bowel movements. Avoid using words like "dirty," "naughty," or "stinky" to describe waste products. These negative terms can make your child feel ashamed and self-conscious. Treat urination and bowel movements in a simple, matter-of-fact manner.
  • Explain the way things should be. At the start, explain to your child that it's time to put her "pee-pee" and "poo- pee" in the potty. Tell your child that when she or he feels the need to go, to hold it in just long enough to walk to the potty, sit down, and let it go.
  • Talk up the advantages. Talk to your child about the advantages of being potty trained: no more diaper rash, no more interruptions for diaper changing, and the pleasure of being clean and dry. Discuss potty training as an important stage of growing up.

  • Use dolls or action figures. Sit your child's favorite doll or action figure on a pretend potty, explaining "the baby is going pee-pee in the potty." Put diapers on his favorite stuffed bear. Then graduate the bear to underwear.
  • Introduce a book or video. Present potty training books and potty training videos so your child can see other children learning to use the potty. These potty training materials are available online or in your local bookstore. Just like some parents enjoy reading materials while sitting on the toilet, a toddler's potty training book can help the minutes quickly pass.
  • Pick a potty day. Ask your child when s/he wants to begin to learn how to use the potty. Circle the date on your calendar for your child to see, and keep reminding her/him that "potty day" is almost here.
  • Watch out for tilting toilet seats. Some seats have a tendency to fall quickly when put upright. If the seat tilts or must be supported by hand, change it. The seat must be stay up so it doesn't fall down and strike a boy's penis when his is urinating standing up.
  • Squash the roll. If your toddler likes to unroll the toilet paper, try this. Before you put a new roll on the roller, squash the roll so that the cardboard roll inside is no longer round. This way, it will not unroll as fast. Also, toddlers who are potty training will not get too much paper per tug on the roll.
  • Give praise! Don't forget to happily tell your potty training toddler when she or he is doing  a good job on the potty!

More Potty Training Tips
Potty training toddlers can be trying, however sometimes, potty training tips from other parents can be quite helpful. Here are some potty training tips from parents who have tackled potty training.

A surefire potty training to reach toilet-teaching success: "Let your toddler go naked around the house for a period of time during the day. Have a small potty chair you can bring in the family room with him for potty training. Have him sit often, read, watch a video, or play on or near the potty during potty training. If you catch him watering on the floor, be quick and get him on that potty! Be sure to reward him for potty training success - we use two M&Ms. After he gets very good at this, then transition him to cotton training pants and a potty training schedule that has him going every 2 hours. Also, take him to the potty; don't ask. Take him every 2 hours, after meals, naps and snacks until he goes to the potty on his own."

Potty training idea: "We made a potty training chart and every time he goes potty in the toilet he gets a gold star. For a poop, he gets two stars. He thinks this is very cool. Then every five stars he gets a reward. After he gets 75 stars he gets an inflatable pool to play with in the back yard. Hopefully after this many stars he'll be close to done!"

Potty training tricks: "I let my son be naked in the house and this potty training has worked wonders for us. We reward him for a potty training job well done. He gets so excited and proud of himself for going on the big potty! As a potty training reward, I lift him in the air and say "hip-hip-hooray, hip-hip-hooray, hip-hip-hooray! It’s a great potty day!" He loves that. Plus, I’ll give him candy now and then during potty training."

Potty training that works: Instead of saying "sit on the potty before we go to the library," I say, "After you have gone to the potty, we'll go to the library." Then I relax and do something else to make it seem like I have all the time in the world to wait. I want to give her the message that she knows her body best and that she has a choice. She can either sit on potty now and go to library, or not sit on potty and find something to do at home while waiting for that potty urge. Of course, I always choose things she loves like going outside on the swing or going to the library. I hope this potty training tip works for you!"

Potty training: "Just remember to be patient with potty training! Some older kids learn easily, but many kids lose interest in potty training at the very time parents are ready to pull their hair out from changing all of the diapers! Potty training is a learning process for most that takes time and commitment."

Potty training game for boys: "Use cheerios in the toilet, and teach your child to just aim for the middle. This potty training tip has worked for my son! I was in no hurry to have my son stand. I thought it would be really messy. But he insisted after about two months of potty training that he wanted to do it like Daddy. I'm happy to say I think he only missed his aim about once or twice in the last six months."

Potty training advice: "My son has the same potty in each bathroom, which makes him so much more comfortable. Also, we have one of those little seats to put on the potty. It's soft and cushy with handles and he likes that. Definitely use the stool in front of the toilet."

Potty training scheduling: “Take your child to the bathroom every hour and then after meals, snacks, and sleep when potty training. The obstacle a lot of parents face is that they get into the habit of asking their child. Instead, tell them and take them. Initiating is often the last step in the potty training process."

Potty training suggestion: "When my son has to go, we’ve recently been getting him to yell "poop!" as loud as he can. While silly, this makes him aware that he needs to keep working on potty training himself, and he won’t be able to go in his diaper once the whole family’s made aware!"

Potty training trick: "Practice potty training at home with a portable seat to put on a big toilet. This way, your child is comfortable on the potty seat, and the grown up potty seems less intimidating. I allow one or two trips to the potty, but not 5. If she seemed afraid during potty training, "practice pretend " at home. Or, if she just likes to check out strange potties, put a limit on the amount of trips. Our boys used to like to do this too, especially in a "grown up" restaurant where things tended to get a bit boring. That way, the kids take potty training seriously. When they’re taken to the potty, they’re expected to go!"
